Context
Groundwater wells sit far from settlements, off the power grid, in areas with patchy network coverage. Yet decisions about water resources and well operation need data.
The problem
Checking each well in person means long trips at real cost, and whatever happens between visits stays unknown. Winter cold of −40°C and network outages punch holes in the data any ordinary device collects.
What we built
We developed autonomous monitoring devices with solar power and batteries that charge below zero, sending groundwater level and device state over cellular to the Beelog telemetry platform (tz.beelog.tech). If the network drops, the device stores up to 30 days of data locally (store-and-forward) and forwards it when the connection returns, so no reading is lost. Threshold rules and STUCK/SPIKE/DROP anomaly detectors flag abnormal behavior automatically.
Where it runs
The system launched in 2021 and runs at remote sites year-round. Components rated for −40°C and standard lightning protection are part of every installation.
What changed
Well data now arrives continuously without site visits, so inspection trips shrink and decisions rest on measurements rather than guesses. Zero-data-gap operation builds a complete historical record even where the network is unreliable. That record goes straight into environmental reporting.
